Deputy Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Gerashchenko claims that there was no real danger for nuclear power facilities in Chernobyl due to forest fires, the correspondent reports news agency on April 14. The comment was published on social networks and made the same theses on Ukrainian television. Gerashchenko claims that, contrary to the statements of a number of politicians and social activists, Chernobyl storage facilities of spent nuclear waste are located in a safe place relative to forest fires and are non-combustible reinforced concrete structures. Around the storage facilities, the forest was specially cut down to avoid the threat of fire. Green plantations are more than 100 meters away. The fire, which was going towards the nuclear waste storage facility of Podlesny, was extinguished on the far approaches as early as the morning of April 13. One of the experts who built KHOYT 2 and served KHOYT 1 and Podlesny told me: Anton, there would be nothing there to burn, even if there was everything to fill with napalm!, said the Deputy Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Gerashchenko noted that rescue workers extinguish the fire using aviation, collapsing hundreds of tons of water from the sky, but until April 13 it was not enough to extinguish all fires. Meanwhile, the main task of preventing the spread of fire to critical infrastructure facilities is successfully handled by rescue workers. The news agency recalls that the day before in Ukraine there was a panic after the statements of a number of public figures and specialists that the F-fires came close to the nuclear fuel storage facilities. The tension fell somewhat after heavy rain rained over Chernobyl on the evening of April 13. A meeting on the situation in the forest fires in Chernobyl with the participation of the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelenskiy is planned for today, April 14.
